Is the Freedom of Religion a Christian Value?

I have written many times and in many ways about my general support for the values and freedoms that we enjoy in the western world. Our politics and morals stem largely from the European values of the 1600's and 1700's; this is, after all, the time frame in which the settlers from the European continent and England came to the Americas en mass and began the process of building a whole new society. The politics of the European continent and England, in turn, find their roots in ancient Greece and Rome with Christian ethics put in place of the ethics and morals that were practiced as a result of the worship of the ancient pantheon of pagan gods. One has to bury not only their head but their shoulders and torso in the sand if they choose to ignore the very basic and irrefutable fact that western civilization is based and founded on Christian mores, which in turn are founded on Judaism and God's Law.

If we look all the way back to the beginning of the Old Testament, we see that God identifies Himself to Adam and Eve, Job, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses and myriad others as The One and the Only God, The Creator of the world. He also states several times in the Scriptures that there is no other God besides Himself. Isaiah 42:21b states, "And there is no other God besides Me, A righteous God and a Savior; There is none except Me." The King James Bible states this as "there is no other God beside me", which offers up the possibility that there are actually other gods, but that Yahweh God is the supreme God. There are more versions have it correct though, stating that there are no other gods 'besides' Him. The original word is the Hebrew word "bilʿăḏê", H1107, which means apart from, except, without. This is to say that God is the ONLY God, that there is none other that is like Him in any way, and no other can make a legitimate claim to be God.

Of course, on this fallen earth, we have seen many, many times throughout history that mankind has worshipped other 'gods', and this is talked about extensively in the Bible. This has come about because we live in a universe that contains both physical and spiritual beings, all of which were created by God. The spiritual beings are of less importance to God than humans are because we have souls that are other than the angels have, but due to the different nature of these created spiritual beings, they seem to us to have supernatural powers. 

Those powers, or rather more accurately abilities, were given to the angels in order that they would be able to minister to God and to us as God requires of them. These abilities include things such as immense strength, the ability to appear in physical form and then to disappear from sight, the ability to travel great distances instantaneously and what appears to be special or secret insights into things that are supposed to be outside the realm and knowledge of humanity, for our own protection.

The Bible tells us that at some point in time in the ancient past, one third of the angels that God created chose to follow Lucifer, whom we also call Satan, or the Tempter, in a rebellion against God. Of course, their rebellion failed and the earth became the playground of those fallen angels when they were cast away from God's presence. Their goal is to separate humanity from God in any way that they can come up with. This is how they cause the most pain for God because He loves all of His creation and longs to draw us to Himself, but His holiness does not allow for fallen and lost creatures to survive in His presence, so by convincing us that we do not need God, or by convincing us to worship pagan gods that are just fallen angels in thinly veiled disguises, we become unholy and unworthy to enter God's presence.

Given that western civilizations are built upon Christian values, and given that Christianity does not allow for forced conversion by any means, much less by threats of violence or death, it has long been held that Christian western nations practice and protect what we refer to as the freedom of religious thought and practice. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms states in its first two clauses that:

1. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.

and

2. Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms: (a) freedom of conscience and religion; (b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication; (c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and (d) freedom of association.

The United States of America has the following wording in their Constitution under the First Amendment that was made to the Constitution after it had first been ratified: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech", and it goes on. 

The United Nations has an Office of the High Commission for Human Rights, and their definition of the freedom of religion states, "Freedom of religion is the right to choose what religion to follow and to worship without undue interference. This fundamental right is guaranteed by article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and of Discrimination Based on Religion or Belief. Freedom of religion or belief has many dimensions and intersects with other human rights, such as the right to freedom of expression or the right to life." 

As such, according to my understanding, any nation that is a member state of the United Nations is supposed to honour the UN's position on the freedom of religion. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was voted upon on December 10, 1948 by 58 countries with a voting result of 48 'yes' votes, 0 'no' votes, 8 abstentions and 2 non-voting members. For the record, the countries that abstained from the vote, thereby signalling disagreement with the motion without placing themselves in a position to outright oppose it, were Byelorussion SSR, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, Union of South Africa, USSR and Yugoslavia. The two countries that did not cast a vote were Honduras and Yemen. Regardless of the abstentions and the refusals or failures to vote at all, the motion passed and was adopted by the U.N.

There are currently 193 countries that are part of the United Nations, but how many of those actually enforce the freedom of religion in their home nations? There are numerous Muslim nations in the U.N., but freedom of religion is either not enforced or not allowed in many if not most of them. At the same time, we are seeing historically western nations accepting Islam as a religion that is equal in importance to the founding Christianity, with politicians practically falling over themselves to court the Muslim vote and apparent unofficial policies that seem to prefer Islam over Christianity. There are even overt legal policies in use by police forces that appear to give preferential treatment to Muslims over native Christians.

As an example, I recently saw a story where a mosque in Surrey, B.C. had threatening graffiti and raw bacon left on it. This made the news on multiple outlets and the Attorney General of B.C. stated that, "her heart went out to the society and Muslim community following the “hate incident and threats of violence.”" The RCMP are also investigating this as a hate crime. Meanwhile, as of the end of May of 2026, 132 Christian churches of varying denominations have been burned to the ground (33 cases of arson) or otherwise vandalized since 2021, and the media says almost nothing about this, government officials only make a statement if they are hounded, and the RCMP investigations seem to end once they determine that the fires were intentionally set or that there was indeed vandalism. There are no statements about these being hate crimes, and no mention of hate crimes when there is talk of the investigation. Meanwhile, this makes the headlines repeatedly in other countries. They seem to recognize the problems in Canada overseas more than Canadians, Canadian media and Canadian politicians do. There are two standards in this country, and now in many others as well, and the faith of the founders of these countries is being intentionally undermined and devalued.

If we look to Europe, England, the United States and yes, right here in Canada, we see that Muslims are creating their own communities within towns and cities. I hit on Islam quite regularly because it is probably the biggest threat to western democracies, but other religions are no better. Those who come here from other nations are not assimilating with western society, which has always been the expectation of those who move into our western democratic nations. It has gotten to the point that the metropolitan police officers do not even enter dominantly Muslim areas out of fear for their own safety. Sharia law is the rule in these areas and it is strictly enforced, even though the laws of the lands specifically state that not other legal system is allowed to operate within those nations. But the government and law enforcement agencies refuse to enforce the laws of these lands. This is weakness in the face of non-violent invasion; at least, it is non-violent so far.

This is allowed to continue partly because we have weak and feckless leadership in these nations, but the legal system laid the groundwork for it by explicitly stating that all religious practices are allowed.

This is not a Biblical position, nor should it be a Christian position. It is actually my assertion that Satan had his way in planting that idea in the minds of the founders of western civilizations.

I am not saying that Christians need to adopt the aggressive tactics of other religions to force others to convert; that is not what Christ teaches us. What I am saying is that Canada was founded as a Christian nation with Christian laws, and I believe that it is in the best interest of the nation that the freedom of religion that exists under the Charter gets revisited. The very first statement in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms states, "Whereas Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the
supremacy of God and the rule of law:". Therefore, it is imperative that Canada finds the backbone to stand on those principles and to recognize that equal treatment under the law for all religions is leading to the slow, but definitive degradation of our society. This does not mean persecution for those who do not practice Christianity, but it should offer special privileges for those who profess, and more importantly those who practice Christianity.

I don't have a solution for what this may look like, but I think that it could begin with a Christian profession of faith for anybody who is seeking any elected position in this country. I recognize this this is not a foolproof option; exhibit number one is Mark Carney. He professes a Catholic faith, yet his beliefs and deeds are absolutely contrary to what the Catholic church teaches. First and foremost as evidence of this is his absolute support of access to abortion. That should be the first red flag, but too many Canadians who profess Christian faith hold the same position, so they don't see the problem. But just because this is not a perfect solution does not mean that we shouldn't start on the path of change.

That begins with the local school board and town councils, all the way up to federal elections. This would be a very unpopular change to make, but if we do not do this, then we will slowly become governed by those who have come to this nation from elsewhere, bringing their foreign religious practices with them, and we will watch the nation that we have been become the nation that we once were.

This is happening in other countries and has always been the case in some of those countries. It seems backwards and uncivilized to our western sensitivities, but those countries have recognized long ago that it was necessary to the long-term stability of the nation, and it is time that western nations recognize and adopt the same. Just taking that one step could severely curb the influx of those who are actively seeking to undermine our nations and our democracies through population replacement. If they no longer hold preferred status, then it won't be worth their efforts to come to our nations.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, God stated that He is the One and Only God, and that only He is worthy of our worship. So how is it that we have somehow come to agree with the secularists that all religions are equal and deserve the same protections? It is counter to God's desire for  and instruction to us.

When God sent the Israelites into the land of Canaan to claim their inheritance, they were instructed to destroy many of the peoples that were already in that land. One of the reasons for this was that their practices, mainly religious practices, were detestable to God. How do we know this? The Bible tells us.

In Genesis 15:16, God tells Abram that his descendants will return to the land that Abram was living in at that time after a time of enslavement, and that the sins of the Amorites will be the reason for that. God says that "the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete", meaning that though this pagan people were on a trajectory of receiving judgment from God for their immorality, the time had not yet come. God gave them time to repent of their ways, but He already knew that they would not take advantage of that time. Furthermore, the nations of Babylon, Assyria, Egypt, Philistia, Moab and Edom all fell under God's judgment for reasons such as their idolatry, immorality and injustice due to the pagan gods that they worshipped. These nations refused to worship the One True God, and they paid the price.

Our western nations are all falling away from worshipping the One True God as well. We have the foundation of Christianity in all of our national institutions, but we are relying on those institutions rather than relying on God. As such, we have become pagan nations, and as a result, we are asking for more from our governments and less from our God. I recently saw a clip of Josh Howerton in which he was talking about something else, but he made the following accurate statement; "More God requires less government, and less God is always going to require more government." When we pursue God's statutes, we need less assistance, less protection and less intervention by governments, but when we reject God's statutes, we need more assistance, more protection and more intervention.

We have exchanged our God for our elected officials, and we are seeing the result of that in the trajectory of Canada right now. The last ten years have seen a drastic reduction in productivity and economic activity in this country, and as a result, we have become weak on the world stage. Our economic hardships have made crime more appealing and more expensive to fight. Our population has become hooked on alcohol and drugs to dull the ache, and the government is called upon to address a problem that their own policies created. These things have made us ripe for the picking for foreign nationals that seek to colonize (yes, that's what it is) another country.

We are being overrun by peoples of foreign nations, with foreign cultures and religious beliefs that are contrary to the Christian ethics upon which this country was built. This is unsustainable. These people are voting in our elections for those who represent where they come from and not where they chose to come to. This is resulting and will continue to result in Canada becoming more and more like the second and third world countries that these foreigners have come from, and our government is either ignorant of this or this in intentional; I suspect that it is the latter.

I do not have a problem with immigration the way that it used to be run in this country for decades, but since the Liberal Party came into power in 2015, our immigration policy has been severely weakened. Justin Trudeau once stated that Christians are the worst part of Canadian society, and the policies that he implemented have had a regular bent against Christians, instead offering preference to any and all religions that are not Christian. Mark Carney appears to share that sentiment, and Canada is paying the price for those beliefs that are held at the top of our government structure. Christian Canadians are being replaced because we cannot be removed; yet. The country is being destroyed economically, culturally and socially. I believe that it is intentional and that it is in preparation for however the End Times scenario will play out.

The purpose of this article has been to show that God does not share the western idea of the freedom of religion. He is forcefully adamant that He alone is worthy of our worship, and He has judged nations for their refusal to recognize Him as their God. In the name of compassion and "human rights", we have undermined God's design for our Christian nations, and as a result, we are witnessing the collapse of western Christian societies and the growth of cultures within our western nations that are actually set against the very things that make us susceptible to their infiltration.

God set the standard for our protection. Nationally, we have rejected and forgotten God. It should be no surprise that He has abandoned us to the consequences of our decisions. The Bible is full of stories of what happened to national Israel when they rejected God. They faced famine, disease and invasion of nations that hated them. But, when they turned back to Him and repented of their disobedience, He restored them and set them free from their enslavement. We still have the chance to turn this country around, but I don't know how much longer that will be the case. 

It appears that Germany has recently decided that they have grown tired of the direction that their left wing governments have lead the country, and they recently elected a minority right wing government; something that has not happened for many, many years. A right wing government does not guarantee the pursuit of God, by either individuals or a nation, but the progressive left wing leaders of the world have done immense damage to western democracies because of their ideological actions. The only option left to the populace is to elect the opposite political leaders and hope for better from them.

As I have noted before, and I will likely note many more times, even the Bible indicates that those who pursue left wing political ideas are not in alignment with God. Ecclesiastes 10:2 states, "A wise man’s heart directs him toward the right, but the foolish man’s heart directs him toward the left." I have not figured out any other meaning to these words of wisdom other than if this refers to our current political situation. 

If you are a Christian, or even if you are just concerned about the direction of this country, please consider those words of wisdom as delivered by Solomon before you mark the next election ballot. Our problems began as spiritual issues and have devolved into political issues. The first step to reversing the trend is to return to God, and the second step is to choose wisely in our political choices. The spiritual health of the nation will always predict the overall health of the nation.
