People are focusing more on merely surviving than we have had to for many years prior to this. Add to this the use of smartphones with social media and legacy media apps inundating us with a constant barrage of information, and one can understand how the important stuff slips under the radar of individuals. The government and the media are complicit in this. The government controls the messaging by making a big deal out of things that are either unimportant or that it thinks will boost it's political capital and the media has forgotten that it exists to speak truth to power.
